Normal People: Why was the series not filmed chronologically?

Normal People has been adapted from Sally Rooney’s best-selling novel of the same name. The series charts the romance between Marianne Sheridan (played by Daisy Edgar-Jones) and Connell Waldron (Paul Mescal) as they progress from the last year of secondary school to university. Over this time, their relationship is a rollercoaster as they break things off before coming back together.

Why wasn’t Normal People filmed chronologically?

Over the course of Normal People, central characters Marianne and Connell go through many changes.

The series starts with the pair as teenagers in the last year of high school with Connell in the popular group while Marianne is something of an outsider.

They keep their sexual relationship a secret with Connell breaking Marianne’s heart by choosing not to take her to the Debs, their final year prom.

However, there’s a shift when they attend Trinity College in Dublin together as university students.

Suddenly, Marianne becomes the popular one as Connell withdraws into himself, feeling awkward in this new environment.

They continue to grow and their relationship changes throughout the story.

The one constant is their love for each other which ultimately sees them come back together time and again.

Interestingly, this intense love story wasn’t actually filmed in the order viewers watch it.

The stars of the show have opened up about how the scenes were filmed.

Speaking to media including Express.co.uk during a virtual BAFTA Q&A, they revealed all.

Director Lenny Abrahamson said there were “key scenes” which the two stars spent time on, explaining: “They became touchstones for the things that would occur, the central patterns in the relationship. You would tie those down.”

He continued: “It’s amazing how much work you have to do. With the novel, it hits you like a complete thing but as soon as you start to break it down into the process of adaptation, it feels like you have to assemble it all again, learn it from every possible angle.

“The guys have to be able to jump from one stage early in the story to three episodes later maybe across the same day. Being able to do that, you just need to know it so well at an interior level, where you don’t have to think too hard but you can step into those different phases.”

The show was directed by both Abrahamson and Hettie Macdonald in two blocks with each filming half the series.

The filming order was decided upon by the locations. For instance, all the scenes in Marianne’s house shot in one go before moving to another location.

Abrahamson said: “It’s a testament to Daisy and Paul, if you think about how much they change.”

He added: “It’s pretty amazing how they can track those phases so accurately.”

Actress Edgar-Jones said hailed the hair, make-up and costume team for helping her get into the right mindset when filming across the different periods in Marianne’s life.

She said: “You know for me physically, the clothes that you wear and the way you style yourself really make you feel different. I remember the first time wearing the school uniform and feeling very young, that really helped.

“Also, having Lenny and Hettie to guide us was really useful. We felt with Lenny, we’d always discuss the scenes and ground ourselves and check in before we were about to lift off.

“Also, having the book. It was so amazing having your character in-depth, the way your character is feeling with each scene. What I loved was the fact that there is not much dialogue. It’s very sparse, so you’re allowed […] to think the things and feel the feelings and Lenny would capture it and that’s very freeing as an actor because you don’t have to forcefully project something. You can just imagine it and think it.”

  • Normal People season 2: Will Paul Mescal return for another series?

Most TV shows and films aren’t shot in the order they are shown in.

Usually, the sequences scenes are filmed in is likely to be dependent on the availability of the locations and the cast members.

This often means the actors have to get into the right mind frame of their character for a particular character.

Also, an actor will have to carefully look at their character’s arc in the overall story when filming different scenes.

This is all the more challenging given most film and television productions are recorded in a completely different order, which can mean the ending may be one of the first things to be shot and vice-versa.

Once all of the filming has taken place, it will be down to those in the editing room to put the whole thing together and choose which takes to use and in which order – although the script is usually a good indicator of the order of a project.

Normal People airs on BBC One on Mondays at 9pm and season 1 is streaming on BBC iPlayer now

Ozark: Why did Darlene Snell really begin her romance with Wyatt Langmore?

We will use your email address only for sending you newsletters. Please see our Privacy Notice for details of your data protection rights.

Season three of Ozark saw Wyatt Langmore (played by Charlie Tahan) distancing himself from cousin Ruth (Julia Garner) after she’d confessed to murdering his father. Wyatt was left disgusted and spent time squatting in the homes of the more affluent residents of the Ozarks. However, he eventually found himself in the orbit of Darlene Snell (Lisa Emery).

Why did Darlene Snell really begin her romance with Wyatt Langmore in Ozark?

WARNING: This article contains spoilers from Ozark season 3

Darlene invited Wyatt to live with her after realising he had nowhere else left after shunning Ruth.

Wyatt and Darlene seemed to get along well and developed a friendship, which became something more midway through the season.

The turning point came after Wyatt defended Darlene in court during the social service hearing involving infant Zeke Mason.

Wendy Byrde (Laura Linney) was trying to take Zeke away from Darlene by proving she was unfit to be a mother. However, her schemes were scuppered after Wyatt spoke out.

Darlene seemed to reward Wyatt by sleeping with him before it seemed the pair became an item.

She even confided to him how she killed her husband Jacob Snell (Peter Mullan) after Wyatt revealed Ruth had bumped off his dad Russ Langmore (Marc Menchaca) for the Byrdes.

Despite raising a few eyebrows among his cousins due to the age gap between the middle-aged widow and the teen, the romance appeared to have been accepted.

Express.co.uk spoke exclusively to Ozark actor Trevor Long about his thoughts on the romance between Cade and Darlene.

“I thought it was great. I thought that was such an interesting development and I heard some people were kind of upset about it.

“The shock, the age difference. I’m like, ‘Come on.’ Some people were up in arms about it like, ‘That’s disgusting.’

“To me, it was totally believable and totally interesting and totally I get it. I could see how this could develop.

“I thought they’re great together and I thought Charlie, who plays Wyatt, had a great season. A very interesting development for his character and that was exciting.”

Despite the academically-gifted Wyatt missing out on college to remain in the Ozarks, Long said the character seemed “happy”.

Long explained: “I think as messed up as it is, I think there’s some peace there. I think they really care for each other and it could be – aside from the drug cartel – a decent life for him.

“I think it’s definitely an exciting twist and I’m excited to see how it’s going to go.”

While Darlene and Wyatt did genuinely bond, there seemed to a sinister undercurrent.

Heroin queenpin Darlene could well have had ulterior motives for getting Wyatt on side. By the end of season three, she also seemed to have gained another ally in the form of Ruth.

Darlene may well have been using Wyatt ultimately to her own ends in the hopes of building up a group around her following Jacob’s demise.

Wyatt, Ruth and Zeke could all be part of Darlene’s succession plan for her heroin business.

With Wyatt and Ruth now working with her, along with the KC Mob, Darlene is a powerful force to be reckoned with.

She’s a much more powerful foe for the Byrdes, who will be struggling to contend against her.

Netflix has yet to reveal its plans for Ozark but if season four goes ahead, this shift in power with Darlene shoring up her allies could lead to lots of drama.

The 'Grey's Anatomy' Showrunner Explains the One Major Change She's Made to The Series

Grey's Anatomy doesn't want to keep repeating itself. In March, ABC executives announced the show would be ending its season early “out of an abundance of caution" for the cast and crew amidst the coronavirus pandemic. Its new finale aired on April 9, about one month ahead of schedule, capping the season off without one major element: A "shock death."

"There had been so many tragic deaths for so many years on Grey’s Anatomy that I felt like the most surprising thing I could do, repeatedly, was to not kill someone," Krista Vernoff told Us Weekly in a new interview.

“Time after time, no matter how many times I’ve done it, everyone, every time expects that the person who’s in danger or threatened in some way is going to die,” Venoff continued. "On [Grey's] everyone was so used to the shock death that they were always looking for shock death! So I felt like the more surprising thing was to bring the joy and turn up the humor and the playfulness that had, a little bit, fallen out of the show in the wake of Derek’s death. That is how I feel like Grey’s has changed a little since I came back—a lot of characters who might have been dead by now are still alive!”

Perhaps the greatest example of Vernoff's strategy was the sudden departure of Dr. Alex Karev after Justin Chambers moved on from the series back in January. Instead of killing off the beloved character, like many fans feared, Vernoff and creator Shonda Rhimes sent him to live with his former love, Izzie Stevens. This leaves room for his possible return in the future.

As for what's next for the remaining characters on Grey's Anatomy, Vernoff revealed to People that writers have resumed work via Zoom, however, she could not provide details on when filming may begin and when fans can expect season 16 to air.

Emmerdale spoilers: Faith Dingle return ‘sealed’ in huge Nate Robinson twist

We will use your email address only for sending you newsletters. Please see our Privacy Notice for details of your data protection rights.

Emmerdale’s Faith Dingle (played by Sally Dexter) left her son Cain Dingle (Jeff Hordley) heartbroken after he discovered she had known about his long-lost son, Nate Robinson (Jurrel Carter). After being disowned by the Dingles, Faith quickly fled her home after Cain refused to forgive her. Now, Sally Dexter, who plays Faith, has teased a return for her much-loved character.

Last year was a dramatic one for the Dingle clan after Faith realised something was up with her son Cain and his wife Moira’s (Natalie J Robb) marriage.

Fans of the ITV soap had watched Moira conduct an affair with young farmhand Nate for months, not realising who he really was.

It turned out Faith had known all along Nate was Cain’s secret son, with an ex-girlfriend named Cara (Caryll Thomas).

Faith had told Nate’s mum Cara not to contact him and thus, Cain never knew of Nate’s existence, until late last year.

Nate had come to the village to seek revenge on Cain after believing he had deliberately shut him out of his life, hence his affair with Moira.

The trio came to blows in a dangerous climax of the storyline last October, with it looking as though one of them wouldn’t make it out the clash alive.

However, they all lived to tell the tale and Nate and Cain have gradually been working on making amends for lost time but it hasn’t come without its challenges.

Cain accidentally shot Nate whilst protecting Moira in a case of mistaken identity, which has seen more trouble ahead for the family.

But, after making a full recovery, could Nate now find another way to try and repair things with Cain, by bringing Faith back to the Dales?

Sally, who plays the Emmerdale favourite, has teased the idea of returning to the drama – will she decide to do so in order to try and put the past behind her?

Speaking to Metro.co.uk, she said: ”I’ve spent more time on the phone and Zoom and all that computer contact stuff than I can remember doing before so it doesn’t seem like social isolation at all!

“It’s strange to be so physically distant though. I couldn’t say I have a regular routine other than the exercise – and watching Star Trek (the original) at 6pm – oooh I know how to live!

Cain is gradually warming to Nate, so he may decide to do something to help his dad out and take it upon himself to fix his broken relationship with Faith.

Fans of the ITV soap will remember Roy tracking down his estranged brother Richard Lucas last year.

Coronation Street spoilers: Roy Cropper to ’save’ Shona Ramsey in shock move

We will use your email address only for sending you newsletters. Please see our Privacy Notice for details of your data protection rights.

Coronation Street viewers will see Shona Ramsey (played by Julia Goulding) make a dramatic return to the cobbles in episodes to come but she will continue to remain frustrated as she can’t remember anyone from her past. However, it seems one resident will step up and help get Shona back on her feet – Roy Cropper (David Nielsen). But, will he manage to save and repair her relationship with David Platt (Jack P Shepherd) as he makes her a surprising new offer?

Shona has been recovering from her injuries after she was shot by Derek Milligan (Craig Els) by accident over Christmas.

Her nearest and dearest were devastated when they realised Shona couldn’t remember anyone from Weatherfield and she soon refused to see her new husband, David.

David tried a range of tactics to try and get Shona to remember who he was but they failed and he has since been anxious over her return to the cobbles.

Prior to her big comeback, Shona requested to see her son Clayton Hibbs (Callum Harrison) and was left confused after he looked much different to how she remembered.

It didn’t take long for killer Clayton to try and weave his way back into Shona’s life as he delivered a string of lies about David.

Unsure who to turn to, David’s sister Sarah (Tina O’Brien) tried to get Shona back onside after paying her a visit and revealed just how happy she and her husband were together before her ordeal.

However, as she continues to look for answers, it will be someone outside of the Platt clan who makes it their mission to save her – but will she manage to get things back on track?

In upcoming episodes, Shona will run away from the Platt’s house after Sarah talks her into popping over but she becomes overwhelmed with what’s going on.

It’s Roy who will come to her rescue after spotting her outside the cafe and inviting her in, later making an offer to try and get her back on her feet.

Speaking at a recent press event about Shona’s return, Julia, who plays the cafe worker, divulged how Roy will help her out.

Asked who would play a key role in her recovery, she said: “Interestingly – Roy! We know that Shona and Roy had a very good friendship before she had her injury.

“She bolts out of the Platt’s house when she goes to visit, I think it all becomes quite overwhelming for her. So she kind of goes on a little mission of her own to have a look around and maybe jog her own memory.”

“So it’s interesting because it’s like, is there something there, inherent, that she knows that this guy is okay, or does she think he’s a bit of a weirdo?“

‘How dare you!’ Tipping Point contestant rages at fellow player as they clash on ITV show

We will use your email address only for sending you newsletters. Please see our Privacy Notice for details of your data protection rights.

Tipping Point host Ben Shephard, 45, was on hand to welcome another four contestants to the ITV quiz show, all hoping to walk away with a cash prize. As always, the top jackpot players were aiming to win was £10,000, but only one of them could make it to the final round to have the chance to do so. However, two players jokingly clashed in the early stages of the game as one wasn’t happy about the other jumping in and taking the money they could have won.

After introductions had been made, the game got underway with contestant Will storming ahead with £400 in the bank.

Hot on his heels was co-star Jess, who was only £100 behind with a total of £300, so the other two players, Nigel and Vicky, could have done with some luck.

Despite being in second place and answering another question correctly, expectant mother Jess told Ben she would play her counter instead of passing to one of her teammates who needed to bump up their funds.

When she chose the drop zone which had the most potential for her to win yet more cash, one of her fellow players raged as they hadn’t been given the opportunity.

Following her question, the host asked: “Do you want to play or pass?” to which Jess replied: “I’m going to see if I can get anything from drop zone two, please.”

“Ok, light up two for Jess,” Ben instructed the machine, but it was clear contestant Vicky wasn’t too pleased with the decision.

“How dare you!” she exclaimed to her co-star, albeit light-heartedly, which led the lucky player to apologise.

The contestant then pressed her buzzer and as a result, ended up adding a further £100, not as much as she had hoped for.

How dare you!

As the game carried on, Jess knocked her opponents out one-by-one as they failed to top her total by the end of the third round.

This meant the expectant mother was today’s winner and had the chance to play for the £10,000 jackpot on offer.

When asked what she would do with the money she won, the player told Ben she was pregnant and hoping the cash would help towards funds ahead of the baby’s arrival.

All eyes then looked towards the ultimate end goal but unfortunately, the contestant failed to get the star counter over the edge.

By the end of the fourth and final round, Jess had managed to accumulate a grand total of £3,650 to contribute towards her baby fund.

The player also walked away with a holiday to a top UK amusement park, which Ben told her she could delay for once the baby had arrived.

As usual, the host asked the contestant if she wanted to walk away with the money she had already built up, or play three more counters but risk losing everything.

Thinking logically, the expectant mother told the presenter she would accept defeat and go home with her winnings.

Whilst a third simply commented: “#tippingpoint trade.”
