Vanessa Woodfield (played by Michelle Hardwick) arrived in Emmerdale back in 2012 after being hired by Rhona Goskirk (Zoe Henry) to work in the local veterinary surgery. And since her first appearance, she has become popular with ITV viewers, especially when she embarked on a relationship with Charity Dingle (Emma Atkins). The pair have since earned the nickname ‘Vanity’, but in recent weeks, the couple’s relationship has been tested after Vanessa was diagnosed with stage three bowel cancer. With the outcome of the storyline yet to be revealed, the actress who plays Vanessa has spoken about her character’s past, and there is a chance it is going to be explored. Does this mean her mother is going to arrive in the village later this year?

Little is know about Vanessa apart from her being the mother to Johnny and a half-sister to Tracy Metcalfe (Amy Walsh) with whom she shares the same father – Frank Clayton (Michael Praed).

The soap previously revealed how Frank left Vanessa when she was about ten years own and unbeknownst to her, he had another daughter, Tracy in 1989.

Once Frank left, Vanessa’s mother remarried and she took on his surname when he adopted her.

There has been little talk about Vanessa’s mother and the relationship she has with her, but perhaps now she is facing death, viewers could see her brought into the soap?

Speaking about this possibility, the actress who plays Vanessa said: “We don’t know that much about Vanessa’s past. Obviously her dad Frank was part of the show, played by the lovely Michael Praed.

“But we’ve just heard snippets about Vanessa maybe not getting on as well with her mum as she could have done.

“She’s never visited the village,” Michelle remarked in her interview with Digital Spy.

“Vanessa has been to visit her, so obviously they are on speaking terms – but I don’t think she was the lovey-dovey mum she could have been.”

But could this be a future storyline perhaps?

Michelle added: “For me, it would be great to explore that in the future. Especially with what Vanessa’s going through at the moment, who knows? It might happen. It’d be great.”

It comes after the actress teased at the possibility of Vanessa having more siblings than just Tracy.

Back in February this year and during an interview with Inside Soap, the Emmerdale star said she’d “love to explore [whether] Vanessa has any other siblings out there”.

After all, no one knows the outcome of Vanessa’s bowel cancer storyline, therefore it could rightly prompt a visit from her family.

The village vet was diagnosed with stage three earlier this spring.

She has since had surgery to remove the tumour and in scenes set to air this week, she will undergo her first round of chemotherapy.

As a subsequence, her relationship with Charity is on the rocks as the two try to work out what is happening.

But some viewers have pointed out the reason why Charity could be behaving so irrationally.

Also consider that charity was told her mother died from cancer. for years she thought her mum suddenly died because of it. one day she was there, the next she wasn’t.

“So she’s probably subconsciously fearing the exact same thing will happen to vanessa #emmerdale,” a tweet read.

Emmerdale airs Monday, Wednesday and Fridays at 7pm on ITV.
